Alpaca

Alpacas

Alpaca is an animal native to the highest altitudes of the Andean Mountain Region of Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. Their domestication reaches back to Pre-Incan time, more than 5,000 years ago. The Alpaca rovided transportation, clothing and company to the Incas throughout the entire existence of that important civilization.

Alpaca thrives in elevations of between 3,500 and 5,400 meters (2.5 miles) above sea level. Due to this climate, Alpacas have developed high thermo capacity. They are social, gentle and elegant animals. Alpaca demonstrate intelligence along with being inquisitive and observant animals. They should always be kept with others of their kind, or at the very least with other animals. They warn the intruder away by making sharp, noisy inhalations, putting back their ears, twisting their heads and necks backwards toward the perceived threat, threatening to spit.

Sheering Alpaca

There are two types of Alpaca: Huacaya, Its fiber is dense, crimpy sheep-like and Suri with silky dreadlocks. Suri fiber is often preferred by spinners, because its long, has a silky luster and is rarer than Huacayas.

Alpaca is appreciated everywhere, because of its luxurious fiber which is light, soft, silkier to the touch, warmer, not prickly and bears no lanolin, making it nearly hypoallergenic. It has more elasticity and resistance than sheep's wool.  Alpaca's excellent thermal qualities make it quite versatile and allow it to be used in a variety of climates and temperature.

You can find several different qualities or grades of Alpaca fiber, including, Royal Alpaca, Baby Alpaca, Super Fine Alpaca, Huarizo, Gruesa and Alpaca Blends. Its fiber is available in 22 beautiful natural colors and can also be combined with sheep wool and silk. The baby Alpaca is the quality with more use because it is soft, light and warm.

Once you have the chance to fully appreciate Alpaca, especially when you try out several of our luxurious handcrafted artisan designed items such as our hats, sweaters, shawls, and other beautiful products, you'll see why people everywhere love Alpaca. We even offer a large range of Alpaca rugs you're sure to enjoy.
